There is an old saying that goes “the best ideas are often the simplest ones.” Of course, all ideas – if they are to be successful – require a lot of hard work to implement. And that truth is evidenced in the story of The Recycle Biker Shop.
Amy and Dave Marek had a simple idea – give motorcycle riders a way to recoup some of the money they had invested in clothing that they no longer wore or needed. So, they setup a kiosk at a local bike night and started selling gently-used clothing such as jackets, chaps and shirts. And thus, the name “Recycle” was born.
The idea was met with instant success. Bikers loved the opportunity to purchase quality items at a great price. However, there was one problem – consignees didn’t have a way to bring their merchandise to bike night on their motorcycles. Amy and Dave could not keep enough consignment items to satisfy a growing demand and quickly realized the need for a brick and mortar store where people could bring their used clothing on days they were not riding. And thus, the “Shop” was born.
Within months of establishing the store, Amy and Dave’s idea took another step forward when they began to sell new merchandise. The retail side of the business eventually grew to outpace their consignment sales. It wasn’t long thereafter when the shop had to expand to its current size of 3000 square feet.
With a lot of hard work, the simple idea has grown into the Mid-South’s premier independent retailer of motorcycle clothing and accessories. The store offers the largest selection of new helmets in the Memphis area. Brands such as HJC, Vega and Arthur Fulmer can be ordered and custom fit on the spot. Designer lines such as Easy Rider, Sick Boy, Milwaukee and Draggin Jeans highlight an extensive array of clothing. And, yes, the store still gladly accepts your gently used clothing for sale by consignment. Other than your bike, The Recycle Biker Shop has anything and everything you need to “make the ride.”
Of course, everything is made available with the attention to detail and personal customer service that only an independent retailer can provide. So, the next time you are on a run, be sure to stop by and check it all for yourself. As Amy and Dave say, “We don’t care what you ride just as long as you ride!”
